About Sam Matthews, counsellor in Andover

I believe a counsellor should offer a warm, open and non-judgemental space — somewhere you feel safe enough to be honest. Before I became a counsellor I ran my own beauty salon for 26 years, and it taught me how to really listen.

I completed my Counselling Diploma in 2015 and converted it to a BA (Hons) in Counselling at Glasgow Caledonian University in 2018. Most recently I qualified as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I've practised in both the UK and Australia, and since 2013 I've volunteered as a counsellor for the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, supporting people caring for loved ones with dementia, Parkinson's and Huntington's.

Counselling services in Andover and online

I specialise in trauma, and also work with a wide range of everyday struggles.

  • Anxiety Therapy

If anxiety is taking over, you don't have to manage it alone. I'll help you understand what's driving it and learn practical, personalised strategies to ease the symptoms and feel more in control.

  • Depression Therapy

Depression can drain the enjoyment from things you once loved. I'll help you work through what's weighing on you, using evidence-based approaches, so you can rebuild a more hopeful outlook.

  • Trauma Counselling

As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I offer a safe, steady space to work through trauma at your own pace — including PTSD, childhood experiences, abuse and accidents — and develop healthy ways to cope.

  • Relationship Counselling

Relationships matter, and they can be hard. I work with couples to improve communication, rebuild trust and closeness, and strengthen the connection between you.

  • Stress Management

Stress is part of life, but when it becomes overwhelming it affects both mind and body. I'll help you find practical strategies to manage it and protect your wellbeing.

My approach to counselling

I'm a person-centred and integrative counsellor, registered with the BACP and fully insured. I draw on methods from several models of counselling — CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy — and use whichever fits you best.

My approach is built on empathy, compassion and non-judgement. I aim to create a safe, supportive space where you feel comfortable exploring your thoughts and feelings, and where you can develop the skills and tools you need to grow and move forwards happily and confidently.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Noticing how thoughts and feelings shape behaviour, and gently changing unhelpful patterns.

ACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Making peace with what has happened, and living more fully in the present.

CFT

Compassion Focused Therapy

A gentler approach that builds kindness and compassion towards yourself.

Find clarity and purpose in life.
